Anglers can expect to
catch almost any member of the bass family, walleye, crappie, bream,
and catfish.
The lake, according to some persons, has a worldwide
reputation for lunker bass fishing and largemouth bass weighing up
to 12 pounds have been caught to back up the claim.
Fishermen are active
here throughout the year as there is no closed season on Lake
Norfork and the mild winters do not freeze the lake. September
through May is usually considered the best time for catching black
bass. Night fishing with lights for white bass and crappie is
becoming increasingly popular with sportsmen in the summer months.
One of the "must"
things to see in the Lake Norfork Area is the big trout hatchery
below Norfork Dam. This is the largest facility of its kind in the
United States. More than 1,500,000 rainbow trout of catchable size
are turned out annually for stocking coldwater rivers, such as
White River and North Fork River. Trout from this hatchery have grown to weights
of more than 25 pounds in our local rivers. Trout at every stage of
development from the tiny ones just emerging from the little egg up
to the immense 2 to 3 ft. long brood fish, may be seen here. There
are self-guided tours of the complex as well as handicap access.
Lake Norfork is
considered by many to be one of the finest striper lakes in the
United States. An abundance of stripers averaging 17 lbs with many
in the 25-40 lb class, are caught every year. Stocked by the
Arkansas Game & Fish Commission, these striped bass feed primarily
on live shad, making them a welcome addition to our clear waters.
With our mild winters and excellent year-round fishing, Lake Norfork
is the best bet for your trophy striper.
